Now one of our area's most prestigious addresses, Mercer Island, in the middle of Lake Washington, was accessible only by boat until the first floating bridge was built in 1940! The sinking of that bridge in a huge storm in the 1980s resulted in nationwide attention; a new floating bridge was built, and expanded freeway lanes were covered with a lid. Mercer Island acquired huge new park on "found" land, the freeway lid! Mercer Island residents have passed school levies every single time since the 1950's. Scores on standardized tests are consistently among the highest in the state. Property values are also the highest in the state! The schools are absolutely tops; 93% of the high school graduates go on to college. 475 acres of open space and parklands offers many varieties of recreational activities. On the north end of the island is a fabulous 22 acre park with waterfront picnic areas, bike & jogging paths, and an open-air concert stage that's booked all summer. All of Mercer Island is only six square miles! This is Seattle's most prestigious suburb, offering hilltop views and lakeside lawns. The accessibility to both Seattle and the Eastside is superb, and the affluence is legendary. (One writer joked that many residents bait their rat traps with brie!) Mercer Islanders enjoy a safe environment and the small-town ambience of the shopping district. |
