I must tell you about my book. It all happened by chance. I was perhaps nine years old, just back from Girl Scout summer camp with a notebook with many unwritten-on pages. I used it to begin collecting quotations that I read and wanted to remember. This book has become a reflection of all which I value, and aspire to be. The writing-down of these treasures allows me to visit them as many times as I wish, and to make them part of who I am. Some of my favorite quotations Whom, then, do I call educated? First, those who control circumstances instead of being mastered by them, those who meet all occasions manfully and act in accordance with intelligent thinking, those who are honorable in all dealings, who treat good-naturedly persons and things that are disagreeable and, furthermore, those who hold their pleasures under control and are not overcome by misfortune; finally, those who are not spoiled by success. Socrates The only people you should want to get even with are those who have helped you. When thou hast done a good act and another has received it, why dost thou still look for a third thing besides these as fools do, either to have the reputation of having done a good act or to obtain a return? Marcus Aurelius The less one has to do the less time one finds to do it in. Lord Chesterfield A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops. Henry Adams Be a lamp in the chamber if you cannot be a star in the sky. George Eliot The woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those who sang best. Audubon Some days the only thing that goes off as planned is the alarm clock. There is no such thing as a sudden heart attack. It requires years of preparation. I've gone through my book and pulled out a bunch of quotations that have meaning for me. This is just a small sampling of what is there! I'll organize it into categories so you can bite off a small piece that might speak to you right now. Click on the segment that interests you!! |
